Although Ted Sirota’s Rebel Souls are by no means an “Afro-Beat” band, in the sense that a band like Antibalas is, I did write a song dedicated to the late poet/activist Ken Saro-Wiwa who was executed by hanging by the Nigerian government in 1995. Fela Kuti is one of my all time favorite musicians and so is his drummer Tony Allen. I used their music as inspiration to write this composition which originally appeared on our Delmark release “Breeding Resistance” in 2004. Somehow the track caught the attention of the guys responsible for putting this compilation together Rough Guide. It’s really a great compilation & I urge you to pick up a copy. To learn more about the story of Ken Saro-Wiwa check out this article.
Check out this one that Geof Bradfield, Noel Kupersmith & I recorded way back when. We put it out ourselves, so we didn’t get any label support for it, but we sold a boatload during our tour of Germany, Switzerland & Austria back in 2003. Well it’s still available (ahem), and I’ve set up a nice little page for it here. You can listen to it and then get your very own copy from CD Baby!
Four of the five Rebel Souls CD’s are on the British label Naim. They have a great website for the label where you can purchase all of our CD’s in various formats, including FLAC, and higher resolution MP3’s. You can also download digital copies of the packaging! You don’t get that anywhere else. Check it out at here.
